Calling all Parents!: Have you tried fish oil with your children?
As enthusiastic promoters of omega-3 fish oil, we here at Fish Oil Blog try to take every opportunity to promote the spread of fish oil’s amazing health benefits. Recently, one of this site’s readers by the name of Maria wrote in with a question:
I am just starting omega 3 vitamins for my 14 year old son. I’m hoping to see a little change in his concentration. I would appreciate more feedback from parents of boys and girls that have tried this vitamin. Thank you, Maria
So, If you’re a parent that’s treated your son or daughter with fish oil, please leave a comment and tell us your story to help Maria and other parents like her. If we like your story, we’ll even publish it on the homepage!
Here are some suggestions for questions to answer in case you’re not sure what to say.
- What condition of your child’s were you treating? (It doesn’t have to be about concentration.)
- What kind of fish oil were you using? Which brand? Capsules, Liquid or other?
- How much fish oil did you give your child everyday?
- Did you see improvements? Were they significant? How quickly did you see changes?
- Would you recommend fish oil to other parents to give their children?
We look forward to hearing your story! Please leave a comment and help spread the word!

I use Carlson’s Fish Oil for my daughter. She takes 1 teaspoon every day, and it contains 800 mg epa & 500 mg dha per teaspoon. I originally started giving it to her for ADHD, and hoping it would help her focus. She also started on Concerta.
I am not sure the fish oil helps her ADHD, however, what did happen was completely unexpected.
She has had terrible seasonal allergies since she was born. She had so many ear infections she had to have ear tubes as a baby. Every year, she saw the doctor for allergies, and used prescription allergy meds, and nasal sprays.
When I started the fish oil, she was congested, and had allergy problems. About 4 days later, I noticed she was clear. I thought maybe it was a coincidence. Well they didn’t come back. That was February.
Four days ago (this is May) I changed the fish oil to another brand with a very high ratio of epa and very little dha, which the latest studies say is beneficial for ADHD. They are gel caps. Her allergies were back in four days.
I gave her the Carlson’s tonight, and she is remarkably better in a few hours. I think maybe the ratio makes the difference, and the doses, although I am not sure.
Unfortunately, I think the ADHD is the same, the meds help more with that.

I was wandering how long one would notice a diffence in the concentration or any change in the person taking the omegas??
Thanks Maria

How safe is this fish oil to my 10 yr old son? what are the common side effects of fish oils after taking? How long does it takes after a series of medication to be completely cure from allergy?
My son currently takes 25mg of Straterra and I want to know how much fish oil do you advise for a 10yr. old? I would rather take the fish oil than the Rx.
I take fish oil whenever my balls start to ache. They usually pulse for a few hours and then gradually subside into a dull ache which seems to dimminish when I take fish oil.I`ve also heard it can make your penis longer and fuller. Also cures global warming and crooked elections too!I`m going to try it on Grandpa next to see if it can revive the dead as well.I`ll keep you posted.
How do I know what kind of Fish Oil I need to get for my 4 year old daughter, She can’t sit still for a moment she is everywhere. She thows the biggest tantrums at the store (well everywhere we go) AM I USING THE RIGHT FISH OIL WITH OMEGA-3?
I have an 18 month old son. I recently met mom’s who give their children fish oil in drinks, etc. I am trying to learn more about this. Where can I buy fish oil like Carlson’s and what type to I get for my son. How much do I give him. He really won’t like the fish taste so I need something I can hide it in. What about for us adults and can you take it if you are trying to get pregnant?
We give our 11 yr old son Fish Liver Oil soft gel capsules each day
(three in the morning and three at night). Each one contains Vit A – 60,000 units and Vit D – 6,000 units . We heard it would be good for ADHD even though we were giving Strattera at the time.
We did not notice a change in behavior, but it has cleared up a jerky “tick” that was becoming very noticable. Once we went on a trip and forgot the fish oil. The “tick” returned within 3 days. Upon returning home we began giving it again and the “tick” disappeared. I would like to know how much is safe to give our son. Perhaps higher doses would be of greater help for his ADHD altho we are now giving him Conerta instead of Strattera.

My son Josh, now 3, was born 3 months early. He seem to do everything slower having not had that last 3 months in the womb for proper brain development. His nurse was concerned that at age 12 months he was trying to talk or make sounds. A holistic advisor advised me to put him on fish oil/omega. Two weeks later we were all sitting at the dinner table as a family when suddenly Josh begans to babble and talk to us (in baby talk of course) as if he were carry on a conversation with us and looked for a response. We were so tickled. We continued him on fish oil and a few weeks later his nurses other concern was put to rest when he up and started walking. He is now one of the most brightest kids as well as a football fanatic.
My daughter, now 10, was born 6 weeks early. Since infancy she has struggled with rage, throwing mega destructive tantrums, and now as a bigger child, hurling insults, throwing things, slamming doors, etc. Often these episodes would be several times a day, and only at home. She has a hard time processing emotions, and jealousy, frustration, sadness and any other uncomfortable emotions are interpreted by her only as anger. She has been on Nordic Naturals lemon flavored fish oil for two weeks and in two weeks, she has raised her voice only once, and slammed a door, only once. She seems to be a lot more even tempered, and generally happier than what we have been accustomed to. I BELIEVE IN FISH OIL!
My daughter is 18 months old and has been diagnosed with food allergies that include shellfish, tuna and other fish… Is it safe for her to take fish oil?
I noticed that with fish oil my kids’ dry skin problem is almost non-existent. I used to put lotion on them twice a day during the heating season. This year I didn’t have to use lotion more then 3 times a week. I have hard time finding the right oil though. I don’t like that Nordic Naturals is so high in vitamin E, but other gel caps aren’t as concentrated. Can’t use gummies with my youngest due to dental problems, and liquid is just plain messy.
Remember our parents telling us that they used to have to take Cod Liver Oil a spoon of it every day. Back in the day th eold people knew what the heck they were doing. Why we ever got away from that I never know. I take fish oil 3 tabelets every day for pain. It helps
