Eskimo Ice Cream

Back in January, I created an entry entitled Fish Oil Ice Cream? in which I talked about how food manufacturers are going to be adding omega-3 fatty acids to various foods, such as ice cream. But little did I know that there’s an actual food eaten by Eskimos called Eskimo Ice Cream! An article about students roughing it in in Alaska describes their diet.

They ate moose, beaver meat and beaver tail, eel, beluga muktuk, and Eskimo “ice cream,” which is made of fish oil – generated by literally squeezing the fish – berries, lard and sugar.

Oh, how delicious it sounds! *Grin* Well, it’s not exactly an Eskimo Pie, but does it really taste like ice cream?

“It doesn’t really taste like ice cream at all,” Carlile observed.

“Like sweet, dried tuna fish,” Kato suggested.

Well, there you have it: Actual omega-3 fish oil ice cream. Here is the recipe for those interested:

1 Pound of Fish
1 Pound of Mixed Berries
1 Heaping Mound of Lard
2 Cups of Sugar (Splenda can be substituted)

Put all ingredients into a sack and stomp. Goes great with beaver stew and is perfect for those cozy nights in the igloo. Juneau what I mean?
