Fish Oil + Exercise = Fat Loss
A brand new study from our mates in Australia tested the effects of fish oil and exercise on body fat composition.
Overweight to obese adults at heightened risk of coronary disease participated in a 12-week intervention trial that examined the effect of omega-3 fish oil taken daily in combination with moderate aerobic exercise three times a week. These people were compared with three groups taking fish oil, sunflower oil or a combination of sunflower oil and exercise.
As well as being overweight, participants were diagnosed as having metabolic syndrome, a cluster of symptoms associated with obesity that include hypertension, high blood triglycerides and insulin resistance or heightened insulin levels, a precursor to diabetes.
Sounds like quite a sickly bunch they’re testing on — surely no significant no significant progress can be made with them in only three short months, right?
Using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), which gives an image of the body and shows the different densities of tissue, researchers were able to distinguish between fat, muscle and bone. The results showed that the total proportion of fat in the body, particularly in the abdominal region, was reduced significantly in the FOX (fish oil & exercise) group, but not by fish oil or exercise alone.
Wow. This is the first recent study I’ve found that actually demonstrates that fish oil does indeed produce fat loss. What’s more?
While blood pressure tended to decrease with fish oil alone, the tendency was once again greatest in the FOX group. FOX also had a beneficial effect on heart rate variability, triglyceride levels and artery function.
Amazing results in only 3 months! Dr. Howe also states that “omega-3 fish oil protects blood vessel walls by increasing their elasticity and improving endothelial dilation, enabling increased delivery of nutrients to exercising muscles.” This makes me wonder what the effect of fish oil is on building muscle mass when combined with strength training.
If you’re trying to lose weight, don’t just exercise, take fish oil too!

My husband takes fishoil tablets for his heart health. He is not obese by any means, but is heavier than he should be/bodyfat. The fish oil I believe can keep people looking younger also. It helps women keep the wrinkles from creeping in! I don’t take the tablets, but take flax oil with my oatmeal or a tbsp. when eating my other low-fat meals.
Good article!
I like this post. Many people are in the dark about the positive effects of “proper” fats in the diet. All of the posts here are filled with good info, I chose to comment on this one only as it pertains to one of the areas that I am committed to. Spread the word!
MY CELL# IS 267-230-3015 I have been taking fish up to 3 times a day 1000mg. I READ A article that fish oil with excersise will help u lose stomache fat. Its true and not only that miraciously it helped my speech and memory.
Hi
What dose of fish oil do people take for heart protection?
Thanks for the article and the links. I’ve been taking fish oil supplements with Omega 3 for some time now, but, until doing some reserach, wasn’t aware that higher dosages could lower my high triglycerides. So, I upped my dosage from 2 grams per day to 5. Then I read that high dosgaes can cause excessive bleeding in some people (see the American Heart Association’s article, which is linked to this page), so, I’m now dropping my dosage to a safer 3 grams per day, which should still be enough to lower my triglycerides, as well as protect my heart and promote fat loss.
Fish oil can boost motablism and allow anyone to loose wait naturally. Exercise is always good too. It boost motablism and burns more fat.
at 43 iam not sure what exactly to get high blood pressure take
I am a diabetic fellow. My sugar reading 7.8 after fasting (10.00 pm). Can fishoil will help me to reduce sugar in my blook? Thank you.
I have been working on losing weight for the last six months, and even with a very good-balanced diet and daily exercise, I was only losing a 1/2 lb. – 1 lb. per week. The first weekend in March, I started supplementing with Fish Oil because I understood it could help with dry skin. About a week later, I started losing anywhere from a 1/2 lb. to 1.2 lbs. per day! I was surpised! The only thing that I was doing differently was taking the fish oil. This was a great post. It affirmed what has been working in my own body over the past few weeks.
“This makes me wonder what the effect of fish oil is on building muscle mass when combined with strength training.”
I use high dose fish oil on a daily basis, both for myself and for my clients (I am a personal trainer). I use it for the fat burning benefits as well as the positive effects it has on muscle mass. Fish oil helps to indirectly build muscle mass by decreasing the inflammation brought on by hard training and increasing recovery capabilities. Better recovery = better strength and size gains. I recommend 5-10g daily for my clients and consume 15-30g daily myself. Bottom line: everybody should be taking fish oil, especially hard training athletes.
I have tried the Omega 3 and I believe it has contibuted to my muscle building, It also cleanses the body and does have some positive effects on my hair.
People need to be more educated on this product.
Strangely enough, our vet perscribed fish oil tablets for our Border Collie, because she has a thryoid problem and it was causing her beautiful black fur to get patches of baldness! It has been a month and all her hair is back shiny as ever! Just two fish oil tables per day was the only dietary change we made. I was amazed!
I am 57 years old and it relatively good shape. I struggle with stress induced uticaria (hives) and I have had to take a prednisone dose pac three times in the past year because the hives get out of control. After I saw my dog improve from taking fish oil tablets, I read up on fish oil. Then I started taking fish oil myself, just two a day. The only other thing I did was start a daily multiple vitamin and started drinking lots of water a day. No more hives! No more red ugly rashes in my chest and neck. No more taking dangerous steroids!
I really believe in fish oil now and I will continue to take it and recommend to other people. I can only imagine all the benefits I am receiving from taking fish oil .
I am taking the Fish Oil Omega-3 1000 mg daily.
I’ve noticed my urnine smells very strong lately.
Almost like cat urine. Infact, much like cat urine.
Is that normal. What does it mean?
Would you say that,Children that are diagnosed with Add,By using this product would help develop the brain or help to relax the child?
Lisa, i’m a bit worried about your urine – how does it smell now?
Fish oil is one of the miracles of the food/supplement world. (My wife agrees about the wrinkle reducing properties, by the way.) But again the key is the study’s findings about combining fish oil with exercise. If you are working on reducing your weight for medical reasons, or at least if you are diabetic, the exercise component is vital. Exercise is an essential part of managing diabetes.

After a heart attack, my husband’s cardiologist is recommending 2000 mg of fish oil, in addition to the statin drugs. Hubbie is not so sure about the statins, but the fish oil fits in with our “natural” mindset. But is is nice to hear an MD recommending a natural product
Weight loss appears to be an added benefit. Thanks for the article.
I can’t agree more about the value of fish oil. I recommend it all of my clients and find it interesting that even mainstream medical professionals are now recommending it. I have been taking fish oil myself for over ten years and reap the benefits every day!
wow… why are you worried of Lisa’s urine???
Dont worry i tried drinking it and it tasted okay.
lisa; that isnt normal
I’m with you i’m curious to see what the effects of fish oil might have on bodybuilding and working out. Personally I already supplement with it for it’s other benefits but I wonder if it’s also helping me build muscle more quickly?
I think fish oild is one of the best supplements that has come out in quite a while. Omega-3’s rock!
Flax seed oil is another supplement that can be used in protein shakes, etc, but fish oil has even more of the “good stuff” (omega-3’s) than flax seed oil.
I use both.
urine that smells like cat pee usually means you have a uti please consult a doctor. If it is very concentrated orange/red definitely see a doctor if your urine is yellow and has odor and is Not clear see a doctor.. good luck
I have become an avid believer in fish oil, as odd as that sounds. I know that fish oil is a major source of the Omega’s, and that there is no way I could get enough from the 1ce a week that I usually eat fish. Now that I’m pregnant, I realize how important these are for the baby too, and never miss a day!
I have been taking fish oil for years and know lots of people who do. I have never heard of anybody with this urine problem before.
Cat urine. LOL Hoe do you know what cat urine smells like? Cat urine? HAhah
My husband takes fish oil one per day and he told me that it is very helpful especially for people over 35 years of age. So I am going to do it too.
Fish oil is amazing. It prevents many types of cancers, helps in brain development, lowers cholesterol, and even can protect you from heart attacks and stroke. I’d highly recommend it to those who don’t regularly eat fish 2-3 times per week.
My husband has noticed his memory is better taking fish oil. We also just started taking it 3 x’s a day to lower cholesterol. We’ll see how that works.
I’m not quite sure whether fish oil contributes to weight loss.
However, I’m pretty sure that it reduces our cholestrol level.
My mother takes it everyday and never had problem with high blood pressure.
Given that, it doesn’t hurt to try this Omega-3.
Thanks for this valuable info.
I know that fish oil is good for you. My grandmother and grandfather take it for heart health. She had open heart surgery and the doctor told her to start taking it to help strengthen her heart muscles.
Wait its not normal to drink your urine or not normal to smell your urine, or not normal to smell your urine and it smell like cat urine? Either way, I think your a little too obsessed with the smell of her urine. Next I bet you will ask to smell her urine.
“I recommend 5-10g daily for my clients and consume 15-30g daily myself.” Peter, won’t these amounts thin the blood too much?
I must admit i have reviewed many weight loss programs and ideas on weightloss but i have never seen one that uses fish oils to promote weightloss this is very interesting i think i will try it.
