Fish Oil Improves Behavior of Children, Improves Concentration and Parent Bonding

Another study out of Durham suggests that fish oil can significantly “improve the behaviour of unruly children and help develop their concentration and bonding with their parents, research has revealed.”

The dramatic results showed that while 47 per cent of the children in the study started with poor behaviour, by the end only 4 per cent had behaviour rated as “poor”.

Simply amazing! What pharmaceutical drug can do that?

“Some two-year-olds went from having a vocabulary of 25 single words to being able to use whole sentences… Others were able to sit down and concentrate for the first time in their lives.”

We’ve heard this before, of course, but what’s the most significant effect?

But perhaps the most significant advantage of this project is that the improvements in behaviour and concentration in the children have facilitated a much stronger bond between the parent and the child.

Good news if you’re a parent trying to improve your child’s relationship with you. Furthermore, fish oil accelerated the rate at which children learned:

After five months, the group who were taking the supplement had made the equivalent of nearly nine months’ improvement in expressive language ability – communication through spoken words.

  3. I started my 4 year old son on Fish Oil four days ago per his pediatrician’s recommendation for behavior. I have noticed that his behavior has gotten worse than it was. Has anyone heard of it having the reverse effect on children?

  5. Compared to what? Many of the improvements noted here could be attributed to normal child development, unless the same improvements were not observed in a control group. Also, were the participants blind to the study? I can imagine many parents acting different toward their children because of the the placebo belief that fish oil would work, which of course would have dramatic improvements on parent-child relationships. I want to give my child fish oil, but would love to have more details of the original study (is it cited anywhere in this article?).

  6. Hi Steve,
Here are 2 study abstracts published from the Durham trials (mentioned in the article above):

These Durham trials were not double-blind, but here are some that were and found enough significant benefit to warrant further research:
