Fish Oil Relieves ADHD and Makes Children Smarter
A study out of England of 120 children between ages 6 and 12 tested the use of fish oil on ADHD symptoms, coordination and short-term memory. The outcome?
Results suggested that after three months, the group using the fatty acid made “highly significant improvements” in 12 out of 13 behavioural scales, including three diagnostic ADHD features – inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Short term memory also significantly improved.
Not just significant, but highly significant improvements in 12 behavioural scales!
One of the head teachers reported that “children with specific difficulties now concentrate more, read better, and their self-esteem has rocketed.” Dr. Madeleine Portwood, an education psychologist, stated that “the most dramatic improvement was in concentration and the spin off was children had better attainments so their reading score improved – some children improved by as much as four years in the six month trial.” (Emphasis mine.) Four year increase in reading abilities in only 6 months?! Whether your kids have ADD/ADHD or not, I’d definitely consider looking into getting them on omega-3 fish oil!
Thank you Philip from Psychiatry News for notifying me of this recent study.

I am 25 years old and have ADHD and I stopped taking stratera which is great…I am now on fish oils and I get the same benefits…they make me feel great…I have worked at GNC for 8 years and have never tried them til now and Im convinced they work…
Hi, i started my 12 yr-old son on fish oil capsules a week ago, he told me he felt like his day went faster than normal and he got a lot done.
What brand do you have your son on. i want to find out if one brand works better than another.
Sorry, I don’t have an answer for you, but I do have another question! My son is almost 12 and I am also considering Omega 3 vitamins but do not now HOW much to give him…have you rec’d any answers? Thanks!
I am barely going to start giving my 11 year-old son the vitamins. He use to take Concerta and also Aderrall but he was not the same funny and fun kid; therefore, we took him off two years ago. He struggled for awhile but then last year, everything came into place (after taking away video games and making him responsible for his work/responsibilities). He is doing well now in school but still has some difficulties in focusing – especially if he doesn’t “get it”. I will keep you posted on the outcome.
I have an 8 years old who has a very bad case of adhd, but my wife and I chosse not to medicate him with these dangerous drugs. Will you please update me on your son’s status. Desparate for help.
Thank You Kevin

I HAVE’NT HAD A CHANCE TO TRY OMEGA 3 VITAMINS ON MY 9YR.OLD SON YET. HOW IS IT WORKING FOR YOU, I HAVE HOWEVER TAKEN HIM OFF OF HIS ADHD MEDICINE, BECAUSE OF THE SIDE AFFECTS HE HAS WHEN HE COMES OFF. BUT I’M GONNA PRAY AND TRY IT OUT
I am 20 years old and have a 9 month old son. I took fish oil suppliments all the way through my pregnancy and i am just astonished at the milestones he has reached at just 9 months. He is almost walking! fish oil truely is a god send. He decided to take them as i wanted to give him the life i always dreamed of. Yes, i majored in mediocrity at school. I still take fish oil and with my parents gave it to me when i was a kid. im sure i would have graduated. But, i must say my memory and concentration has improved vastly and have even started reading alot more. I am thinking about getting my year 11 and 12 equivillency and try to get into university. So in a nutshell – FISH OIL IS AWESOME!
My six year old son was on vyvanse for his severe adhd and we ran out of medications and tried out omega-3 fish oil. He is thriving, active, engaged and no longer roaming the hallways zombielike. He’s smiling and eating also!!! I am so happy that I tried this.
If there is a good fish oil out there please let me know and how much should I give him. He can actually swallow those big horse pills.
My total cholesterol dropped from 274 to 234 in only a few months. I didn’t change my dietary intake or even paid attention to exercise. I plan to keep taking it.
my son is not concetration in school what can i do
This alternative approach is a fantastic idea. I’ve seen first-hand the dangers of medicating children through prescription drugs designed to treat ADD/ADHD – we need more natural approaches like this.
Will fish oil improve skin complexion. I am 32 years . what is my dosage at this age? Can it prevent flu and cough?
I started taking fish oil a few weeks ago and read in Sears’ book that ADD doses of 18g were effective. I slowly increased my dose from one tablespoon to two (18g) and my overall brain functioning has improved. I used to suffer greatly from anxiety, depression, and learning disorder symptoms. Omega 3’s (epa/dha) are the key.
Please Help. What dosage of Omega 3 is recommended for treatment for ADD in young adults? How any grams is needed per body weight?
I have a son that has adhd/pdd and he went on ritalin at 6 and I took him off when he was 12. I hated it. Appetite decreased, was skinny and dark circles under his eyes. What the hell are we parents doing to our kids! Doctors are not going to say try something new because they don’t have a study on anything else. I have my son taking 1 Tablespoon of Metagenics DHA from Dr. Joel Fuhrman which he recommended. I also give him one capsule of an amino acid called L-theanine which calms and is the natural ingrediant in green tea. Suntheanine is a more stronger amino acid, more pure than L-theanine. But either one is very good. My son does really well with them. Try these products. Don’t give up even if your son or daughter takes them for 3 months and you still don’t see any improvement. You will. You must have patience. And watch what they eat. That helps alot. Remember these are disorders NOT diseases. My son looks, feels and is doing better. The drugs out there are not good. No one know what the long term side effects are and that in itself should be scary for any parent and child. The human brain doesn’t fully develop till your 30 years old. Ask any Neurologist. Omega 3 fatty acids are healthy all around. And L-theanine and Suntheanine are safe. Anyone that has depression or anxiety. Get off of those drugs. L-theanine or Suntheanine will help you.
From a mother that is so glad that she found these two products for her son.
Wow, thanks so much for this article. I will let the parents of my Special Needs group know about it.

My children all have ADD, and struggle with concentration and patience. I tried fish oil but didn’t realize it may take more that a few months to really show the benefits. I think I will try it again with them. Thanks for the article!
Omega 3 fatty acids + L-Theanine can work miracles together.
I recommend to buy a supplement of omega higher in DHA than EPA. Also if you are going to get L-theanine buy Suntheanine (purest form of L-theanine for optimun results).
I love Omega 3 Fish oils. My daughter has aspergers syndrome, adhd. She was perviously on Concerta 36 milligrams and zoloft when I started the fish oils. After several weeks, I noticed the concerta was too high and was making her tired, so they dropped it to 27 milligrams. At this time she was still taking fish oils with the concerta. Then after a few more weeks, the 18 milligrams became too high and was no longer lasting long enough to have a significant effect. So I made the most difficult decision to take her off her meds.
My worry was that she needed it for school, so I fought past it and gave her caffine soda to wake her up. It was then that I realized she was doing better without the meds than with them. The fish oil had gotten into her system and were now beginning to work. She is now taking Fish oil and lecithin(instead of Concerta…since they work well together), and St. johns wort (instead of zoloft) two times a day at breakfast… and at dinner…and she is doing amazing.
I am grateful that I now am helping her with something that will benifit her body, rather than something that is slowly destroying it.
She can tell a difference and says that for the first time in her life, she finally fells balanced.
