A Guide to Choosing Fish Oil Capsules

Fish oils have been gaining popularity in recent years due to the health benefits that their active ingredient, Omega-3 fatty acids, have to offer.

There are studies that link Omega-3s to a myriad of health benefits, such as prevention of heart disease, an effective anti-depressant, and even weight loss.  There are also reports and studies that claim Omega-3 fatty acids played a major role in the evolution of the human brain, making it a truly wondrous substance.

Because the average person’s diet today does not contain an adequate amount of fish though, there has been a growing increase in the demand for fish oil capsules. Fish oil capsules are a convenient way of getting your daily dose of Omega-3 fatty acids without having to eat a boatload of fish.  There is a vast array of choices available out there, but not all fish oil capsules are created equal.

Here are some of the things you should consider when choosing fish oil capsules:

The main thing to consider when choosing fish oil capsules is the safety and quality of your choice. Fish oil capsules are also subject to mercury poisoning and other toxins, just as other fish products are. Thankfully, technology has allowed manufacturers to come out with fish oil capsules that are of a higher level of purity.   These are the pharmaceutical grade fish oil capsules.

These pharmaceutical grade fish oil capsules also contain more Omega-3 than natural fish oils, almost double in fact.   Basically, you get a higher concentration of Omega-3 with a lower risk of toxin infection with these fish oil capsules.

Also, try to find out what kinds of fish were used to gather the fish oil when choosing fish oil capsules.  Not all fish are created equal.  Sardines and anchovies are very rich sources of fish oil, and they are at significantly lower risk of toxic contamination than salmon because they’re much lower on the food chain.  Also, keep in mind that cod liver oil may contain high amounts of Vitamin A in the form of retinol, which has been shown to be associated with hip fractures, joint pains, and even hair loss!

One more factor to think about when choosing fish oil capsules is that you are supplementing with fish oils for the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA they contain. You aren’t buying fish oils for the sake of taking in more fish oils. They are a means to an end, so keep that in mind. Check out the information on the label for the DHA and EPA content. The more DHA and EPA, the better.

When choosing fish oil capsules, besides the safety and quality, price will always be a factor. Nobody wants to go broke from buying fish oil capsules. Look for a fish oil capsule that offers a competitive price but does not sacrifice on safety and quality.

Choosing fish oil capsules can be a difficult thing to do, if only because there are so many products on the market today.   Just keep the basics in mind and you can make an informed decision.
