The study was on mice, so don’t get your hopes up just yet! But it does look very promising…
This study followed up on a study of 150 men in Iran which discovered that infertile men had lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their sperm than fertile men. That was the first study of its kind, which sought to analyze the relationship of omega-3 fatty acids to sperm quality and fertility.
Infertility is a condition where men either don’t adequately produce enough sperm or have abnormal sperm that results in their inability to fertilize a female egg (or ovum) to facilitate conception and pregnancy.
Researchers at the University of Illinois created mice that were deficient in DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. They discovered that these mice had much lower sperm counts and far more sperm abnormalities than normal mice.
But what happened when they gave these mice DHA supplements? You guessed it! The mice given DHA showed a significant increase in sperm count and far fewer sperm abnormalities.
While this study was only done on mice, the Iranian study demonstrates that there is indeed a connection between infertility and omega-3 fatty acids. So, if you’re having trouble with infertility, you should definitely consider supplementing with omega-3 fish oil!
